Alan Bruce Ritchie was killed in a blasting accident at the Sullivan mine, Kimberley, on December 27th, 1937.

A Canadian by birth, he was educated at McGill, and graduated in mining engineering in 1906, He joined the staff of the Consolidated Mining & Smelting Co. of Canada soon after graduation, and most of his career was spent in the service of that company. He first went to Trail, B.C., as chemist and then to the Hall Mine Smelting Co. in 1907. During the next few years he served in various capacities at Hall mines, Hosmer mines and at Cobalt, and later acquired properties in the Slocan Country on his own account.

He returned to the service of the Consolidated Company in 1918 and became underground superintendent of the Molly Gibson mine at Kootenay Lake. His service with the company was interrupted by the Great War when he went overseas with the first contingent from Canada. He attained the rank of Major and was second in command of the Canadian Tunnelling Companies. After the War he was appointed assistant to the vice-president in charge of the Trail mines and later he became superintendent of operations at Kimberley.

Mr. Ritchie was elected an Associate of the Institution in 1919.
