James Richardson died at St. Austell, Cornwall, on April 2nd, 1940, at the age of 59.

He entered Camborne School of Mines in 1908, and on completion of his course went on mines in the Johannesburg Consolidated group. From 1919 to 1926 he was manager respectively of New State Areas, Van Ryn Deep and Government Gold Mining Areas, and in 1926 was appointed general manager of Randfontein Estates Gold Mining Co., Ltd., from which position he retired in 1935. He was for one year President of the Association of Mine Managers of the Transvaal.

Mr. Richardson was elected a Member of the Institution in 1936.
