Thomas Wyville Rutherfurd died on active service in 1918 whilst serving in the New Zealand Expeditionary Force.

He was a graduate of the Otego School of Mines, passing out with the Associateship in Mining in 1912. On leaving the school he was for seven months a mining cadet at the State coal mine, Greymouth, and after that entered the service of the Consolidated Gold Fields of New Zealand, Ltd., as assistant surveyor at the Energetic and Progress Gold Mines, Reefton.

Mr. Rutherfurd was admitted to Studentship of the Institution in 1912.
