Alan Whatmough died after a short illness in hospital at Nairobi on June 10th, 1944, at the age of 39.

He began his mining career in Canada in June, 1927, at Hollinger Consolidated Gold Mines, Ltd., Ontario, where he worked as a miner until May, 1929. From October, 1931, to August, 1934, he was engaged by the McIntyre-Porcupine Mines, Ltd., of Ontario, as development contractor and stope boss, and for nearly a year afterwards he was employed by Taquah and Abbosso Gold Mines, Ltd., Gold Coast, as shift boss and later as acting mine captain. From January, 1936, until his untimely death he was underground manager to the Rosterman Gold Mines, Ltd., Kakamega, Kenya, in complete charge of all underground operations.

Mr. Whatmough was elected an Associate of the Institution in 1939.
