Arthur Raymond Weigall died in Chosen (Korea) on February 28th, 1931, at the age of 58.
He was born at Sydney, New South Wales, in August, 1872, and was educated at the Sydney Grammar School. In 1891 he entered the Mining School of the University, and in March, 1891, graduated with the degree of Bachelor of Engineering in Mining, head of the year. During the course he had already taken Honours in chemistry and been awarded the Slade Prize. After about six months spent in post-graduate work, he was engaged by the Mount Morgan Gold Mining Co., Ltd., and remained with that company until October, 1897, when he resigned his position there to take up an appointment as mining engineer in charge of the Totok Gold Mining Co., Celebes, Dutch East Indies.
Two years later, he accepted the position of manager of the Kechan Gold Mining Co., Pahang, Malay Peninsula, but in eighteen months had to resign on account of ill health, and went to Japan as manager, first of the Japan Mining Syndicate, and afterwards of the Japan Mining Co. Ltd. in 1904 he transferred his activities to Korea, where he was associated respectively with the Seoul Mining Co., Holkol, the French Mining Concession, and the Chosen Corporation, Ltd. He contributed a paper to the Transactions of the Institution (Vol. xv, 1906) on ‘Gold Mining in Japan’, and occasionally took part in the discussion of papers by other authors.
Mr. Weigall was elected a Member of the Institution in 1903.
