Lieutenant Benedictus Hamilton Ziervogel, South African Engineer Corps, was killed in action in Italy. He was about 41 years of age.

He received his professional training at the Witwatersrand University, where he took the full course in Mining and Metallurgy and graduated with the B.Sc. degree in Mining Engineering in 1927. He had previously been engaged as an official learner at Village Deep, Ltd., Johannesburg, and as assistant sampler at the Nourse mines for a year. He continued as an official mine learner at Crown Mines, Ltd., Johannesburg, from March to September, 1927, and then became assistant surveyor for a year before entering the Study Department.

In June, 1929, he was made chief study supervisor and stayed with Crown Mines until 1935, when he entered the service of the Union of South Africa Mines Department at Germiston, Transvaal. He was promoted Deputy Inspector of Mines, Brakpan, in 1937, and transferred to Bloemfontein in 1938, resigning in the following year to join the staff of De Beers Consolidated Mines, Ltd., at Kimberley, Cape Province.

Mr. Ziervogel enlisted as a sapper in the South African Engineer Corps during the recent war and later gained his commission. He was serving with the Central Mediterranean Force at the time of his death.

He was elected to Associateship of the Institution in 1929.
